Two Wall Street Journal executives are leaving the company this month, including Chief Digital Sales Officer Brad Westbrook. In an email to Ad Age confirming word of his departure, Mr. Westbrook said he is “starting a new media company” with actor and investor Ashton Kutcher, but declined to provide more details.

Mr. Kutcher stars on the CBS sitcom “Two And A Half Men,” and Forbes magazine ranked him as the highest-paid TV actor this year, but he is also a high-profile venture capitalist, with investments in Skype, Foursquare and Airbnb.

A spokeswoman for Mr. Kutcher said she was not aware of the new company.

quarterly_meeting

LaneTerralever’s quarterly meetings are noteworthy affairs, complete with food, friends, and entertainment. We all pile into our cars in the middle of the day and travel to the designated venue – in this case, the Heard Museum, just down the street from our Phoenix office (if you haven’t been recently, they have some fantastic new exhibits).

Here’s a snapshot of what went down at our event last week.

We’re all Localists

local_first_arizona

Local First Arizona serves to connect individuals with locally owned businesses to improve our community and economy. Their new Localist program offers members VIP access to events hosted by local businesses across the state. For example, this September, members who book a treatment at VH Spa for Vitality + Health in Scottsdale will receive a complimentary 30-minute scrub or massage. Localists in Tucson can get 20% tickets to University of Arizona art performances. Some past events have included meeting the elephants at the Phoenix Zoo and early-bird access to Devoured Food + Wine tickets.

LaneTerralever took the opportunity to dig deep with the local community by providing Localist cards to our staff. “The corporate purchase of Localist cards is the first of its kind for Local First Arizona’s newest membership program,” writes Margaree Bigler, Localist Program Director. We are certainly excited to get involved and see the Localist movement grow!

Jacky Fain receives Real LaneTerralever Award

jacky_fain_real_lt_award

Each quarter the peer-nominated Real LaneTerralever Award is passed to a team member who lives out our company values of Unity, Boldness, Humble Confidence, Craftsmanship, Integrity, and Speed with Purpose. As of last Thursday, the most recent recipient is our Quality Assurance Manager Jacky Fain. Jacky joined LT just under a year ago and has brought thoughtfulness and an infectiously positive attitude day in and day out. Congratulations, Jacky! We’re so glad to have you on our team.

Olympian Mechelle Freeman shares her story

Mechelle_Freeman_Carrie_Jeannot

Mechelle excels as an Account Manager at LT. However, what you may not know is that she also excels at running track. In 2007, the former college athlete left her job in New York to start training again. Less than one year later, she was a World Champion, and shortly after that, she competed at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

“Do it afraid,” she says, “Pursuing your dream will be scary. Your faith has to be bigger than that fear in order to move forward and succeed.”

Taking the time to get together and recognize the great work that everyone puts forth is central to making LaneTerralever the great company that it is. Thank you to everyone who had a hand in crafting this event!

AmericanApparelFireworksUnfortunately, social media slip-ups do happen. You might have heard about the graphic US Airways whoopsie on Twitter. Or perhaps you are familiar with the more recent American Apparel flop, in which the retailer posted a 4th of July fireworks photo with the hashtags #smoke and #clouds, only to find that the photo was actually of the 1986 Challenger explosion. While mistakes can be inevitable, there are some precautionary methods that you can take to minimize the odds. In this article we will highlight some ways to deal with a social media mess up and share some tips on how to prevent it from ever happening to you.

If it happens:

Publicly apologize

According to recent research, more than three quarters (77%) of US adults have Internet service at home. Excluding e-mail, internet users 18-34 access the internet nearly 20 times per week, or about three times per day. So assuming that users did not see your mistake is not practical logic. Admitting that a bad thing happened is the first step toward fixing the problem. After taking responsibility, make sure to issue a public apology via letter, press conference, or social media.

Respond to complaints respectfully and quickly

Don’t give recycled responses. There’s nothing worse or more careless than giving one generic apology to every complaint or negative comment that rolls in. Take the time to read every complaint and respond with a unique and genuine answer. Hiring a qualified and experienced team to handle and respond to negative commentary is a great option as well.

Make sure there is more good than bad

KFC’s hefty donation to a little girl for surgery after their public faux pas is a perfect example of this. If a slip up occurs, even if you’re not sure it is your fault, offer those affected by it discounts, kindness, and/or compensation for their involvement.

Prevent it from happening:

Check, check, and check one more time

The three check rule is a method that we at LaneTerralever use frequently. The person who creates the content edits through it once. Then the content is sent to another person to check again. Before the posts are scheduled, the content is combed through one more time by yet another proofreader. It may seem excessive, but this method serves its purpose. Sometimes there are simple grammatical errors that one and even two pairs of eyes can’t catch. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

Change your passwords

When somebody that has access to your organization’s social media passwords leaves the company, change all of your passwords. Even if you trust them, it’s not worth the risk. And it only takes a couple of minutes to do!

Hire a good agency

Hiring an all-inclusive agency to handle your social media, digital marketing, and public relations is one of the safest routes to take. A good agency can increase your brand awareness, better your marketing strategy, pump up your digital presence, and – of course – navigate the sticky situations.

Social media is huge, and it has the power to make or break your brand. Make sure your online presence is representing your brand well by taking extra care and responding to hiccups the right way.

Is Yo, the much-ridiculed mobile app, also the next big product launching pad?

On Thursday, Motorola will release its internet-connected watch, the Moto360, exclusively over Yo, a messaging app that primarily lets users send their contacts just one message: “Yo.”

Under the promotion, Yo users who send Motorola a “Yo” in time will receive a link from the company at some point during the day. (Yo says it’s 4 p.m. ET, but Motorola isn’t being specific.) The first 20 participants to click on the link will win a smartwatch.

Twitter is launching a training program for agencies to make sure that they — along with their clients’ dollars — stick around.

The social-media platform’s online program is called Flight School and aims to familiarize shops with the service and help them keep abreast of new features. Twitter quietly tested the program with three partners — Starcom MediaVest Group, MEC and Omnicom Group — in addition to a dozen smaller agencies. It now plans to open it up to any interested shops.

“The way that we think about Twitter,” said Christine Cuoco, Twitter’s head of agency strategy, “is how it’s most valuable to an agency and their clients when it’s integrated across entire marketing strategies.”
