Twitter is planning to release a mobile-advertising product in the next few weeks that app makers can use to encourage downloads of their programs, according to people with knowledge of the matter.

The format, known as an app-install ad, will help the San Francisco-based microblogging company attract marketers in the e-commerce and game industries, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the information is private. If users click on one of the ads that appears in their Twitter feed on mobile devices, they will be directed to the advertiser’s page in a mobile-app store where they can download the program.

Twitter is expanding its mobile-ad offerings as it works to deliver on the promise of its November initial public offering. The company’s stock has soared 78% since then as analysts have anticipated Twitter’s annual revenue will almost double to $1.2 billion this year, even as user growth has slowed. Mobile is a key piece of Twitter’s business, since that’s where its user base is growing faster and where it derives more than 75% of ad revenue.

Ad Age is inviting submissions for its new Digital Campaign of the Year category as part of its annual Small Agency Awards.

The annual contest honors independent shops with 150 or fewer employees. The goal of these awards — now in their sixth year — is to ensure that the smart thinking and innovative brand ideas produced by smaller shops are getting their due. We’ve observed that all too often this community’s work isn’t being surfaced in the big awards shows.

The best part? Winning a Small Agency Award can help under-appreciated shops get noticed in a major way.

Twitter announced earlier this week that it would start letting users share up to four photos within a single tweet, as well as tag up to 10 other users in a photo in a Facebook-like way.

Some early-adopting brands are already experimenting with the ability to share more photos — which appear in a collage format underneath the text of a tweet — and effectively pack their tweets with more content.

The new features are a continuation of Twitter’s efforts to give tweets more visual impact and another step away from the spareness and simplicity the service was known for back when a post could include only 140 characters and nothing else.

UPDATE: An Amazon spokeswoman responded after this article was posted to deny that a free streaming service was in the works. “We have a video advertising business that currently offers programs like First Episode Free and ads associated with movie and game trailers,” she said in an email, “and we’re often experimenting with new things, but we have no plans to offer a free streaming media service.”

Amazon has been ramping up its ad-supported video efforts over the last six months. Now we may know why.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg thinks he’s discovered the future of social-networking: connecting people in a virtual world.

That’s the rationale he offered for Facebook’s announced $2-billion purchase of Oculus VR, an Irvine, Calif.-based virtual-reality company that’s currently working on a headset for 3-D gaming. The long-term notion is for people to have face-to-face interactions with each other, not just to post in each other’s news feeds.

“Oculus has the potential to be the most social platform ever,” he said. “Today social networks are about sharing moments, but tomorrow it will be about sharing experiences.”

YouTube is where the kids are, and now Walt Disney Co. has a beachhead, acquiring Maker Sudios for $500 million, the company announced Monday.

The price tag eclipses the $33 million DreamWorks shelled out last April for teen-focused YouTube network AwesomenessTV.

Disney has had a hard time finding the success online that it has historically enjoyed in film and television. At the same time upstarts like Maker Studios have attracted the young audience Disney craves, while struggling with tough online-ad economics.
